The Bird Conservation Network is sponsoring its third Give Back to the Birds – Field Trip/Workday at Baker’s Lake, an Illinois Nature Preserve, located in Barrington, Cook County. This area has a beautiful savanna as well as the lake, containing a heron rookery.

On this early fall morning, with the help of our Barrington area birding experts, we will look for migrants such as warblers in the savanna; and terns, shorebirds, swallows and early-arriving waterfowl on the lake where a spotting scope would be helpful. Our trip will begin at the woods and wetland of Ron Beese Park, which are known for concentrations of fall migrants.

After the early morning bird walk, we will enjoy a complimentary snack before we begin to collect seeds in the savanna. These seeds will be spread in the savanna restorations at the Spring Creek preserves and Citizens for Conservation properties such as Grigsby Prairie and Flint Creek Savanna at a later date. Join in this pioneering work to help promote native wildflowers and more desirable habitat for fall migrants.

This Saturday trip/workday will take place rain or shine.  People of all ages will be able to find a way to help. Dress in layers, with sturdy shoes. Tools will be provided.

Bring a sack lunch if you would like to picnic after the workday. Goodies for desert will be provided!

BCN would like to know how many to plan for. Please RSVP to Joan Bruchman at pjbruchman@yahoo.com or 847-687-3108. Also let Joan know if you would like to be part of a carpool.
