Visiting the Chicago area at the end of June 2012
« : January 09, 2012, 04:20:18 PM »
I am from the Buffalo New York area. We will be visiting Chicago and some surrounding areas in late June. I'd love to add some bird species to my life list, and am wondering what birds I might see that I definitely won't see in New York?  I realize that is somewhat vague and I apologize. Any help or input is welcome

Hands down - Bell's Vireo.

Others that you may have a more difficult time getting in Buffalo, which are sometimes found here in June include.

Trumpeter Swan
Neotropic Cormorant
Little Blue Heron
Snowy Egret
Yellow-crowned Night-heron
King Rail

I suspect Henslow's Sparrow would be high in your list.  Not sure if you have it for NY, but its probably the one bird that Illinois can claim the most of.  They can be locally abundant.

I would also add Loggerhead Shrike, Sedge Wren, Acadian Flycatcher, White-eyed Vireo, Blue Grosbeak, Summer Tanager, Clay-colored Sparrow, Western Meadowlark, Dickcissel and Brewer's and Yellow-headed Blackbirds to Matthew's list.  Not 100% sure of the range wrt to Buffalo on all those, but I suspect most are pretty sparse in that area.  Some may be tough or localized though, particularly in the northern part of the region.

Good Luck,

If you are willing to drive, it might be worth your while to add Eurasian Tree Sparrow.  I'm not sure how abundant they are in the Chicago area, but they are easily accessible at certain locations in central Illinois.

Could add Swainson's Hawk if you travel alittle west of Chicago.  It is listed as a rarity in some parts of New York.

An uncommon lakefront migrant in April.
