Headng out Saturday any suggestions?
« : October 08, 2009, 03:16:36 PM »
I'm free all day Saturday and plan on spending all day birding.  I live downtown Chicago but will drive to where ever I need to go.  (within an hour or 2)

any suggestions on a really active spot right now?

The weekly conundrum.

It all really depends on the weather, this time of year. October and November (particularly November) can be as or more exciting than May around these parts. If we have good N/NW/NE winds, the lakefront is the place to be. Montrose can grab a goody, but Lake County is the place to be. Stateline Beach, the hawk watch, Waukegan beach...IL Beach State Park, Lyons Woods, Rollins Savannah.

A good day of birding that is.

For my money, November is the most exciting month to bird in the Chicago area. The whole month, and half way into December is just wave after wave of unusual birds.

I had high hopes for this weekend but it looks like the weather will be a bust, at least for big-ticket items like hawks and jaegers. Perhaps the Chicago lakefront parks will be worth doing. This is a good time for sparrows.

sweet, thanks Gregg.  I thought Oct was the beginning of the end of migration.   I'm going to head to Montrose. I'm renting a fast telephoto lens, how to take some good photos.  I'll be sure to post what I can capture. (in the photo of course)

Weekend birding

Northwest winds are forecast for Saturday evening/Sunday morning which may bring in some migrant passerines . However please be aware that the Chicago Marathon is Sunday morning. Although the course does not include Lake Shore Drive the peripheral effect of the many road closures is typically significant.

If you want to hang out in the Western burbs, there will be an organized walk at Cantigny Park in Winfield at 7:30 Saturday.  Here is a link:

I'd rather be hiking!
