I just needed to know the number of birds in Evanston for a report.  And I decided to try the new Midwest Avian Data Center for the answer. http://data.prbo.org/partners/mwadc/index.php?page=137  Wow, was it easy!  Just draw a polygon on the map and a list appears.  I just had to pick out all the  hybrids, forms, sp.s, etc. - hope I got them all.

So, the number recorded in eBird for Evanston is 238, although I thought of at least three more I've seen.  Here they are:

This is an interesting mapping tool, Judy.

I know Snowy Owl is one that you've seen in Evanston. I'm curious. What are the other two?

Also, I wonder about that Yellow-billed Loon record.

I wish I had a comprehensive record of all species seen in Evanston. I assume it's approaching 300 as Eric Walters has a lakefront list of 277. Not sure if he's seen any of these, but I know there are records for at least 30 more missing from the mapping list:

American Avocet
Ancient Murrelet
Barn Owl
Bewick's Wren
Black-headed Gull
Black-throated Gray Warbler
Bohemian Waxwing
Blue Grosbeak
Brant
Brown Pelican
Burrowing Owl
Cinnamon Teal
Evening Grosbeak
Eurasian Wigeon
Franklin's Gull
Henslow's Sparrow
King Eider
Marbled Godwit
Mew Gull
Nelson's Sparrow
Parasitic Jaeger
Pomarine Jaeger
Purple Gallinule
Red Phalarope
Sandwich Tern
Sprague's Pipit
Vermilion Flycatcher
Western Kingbird
White-winged Dove
Yellow Rail

Interesting result, Judy.  So my question is why are the birds from the Northwestern Landfill not included?  Outside your polygon, or some glitch?  I remembered that there was a Townsend's Solitaire there at some point and wasn't sure it had been entered, but I checked e-bird and there it was entered by Joe Lill at least.  In fact when I called up a list from the landfill (an e-bird hotspot), I almost immediately found at least 5 species not on the list you got from the MADC site (besides solitaire, there were at least Greater White-fronted Goose, Red-necked, Eared and Western grebes).
    What would Ryan Gosling say?

Hm, I'll look into it.  Thanks.  This is still in development (as you probably know) and they would no doubt appreciate the feedback.

There's got to be an eBird hey girl or two.  I'll mull that one over.  But if he communicates with you first, be sure to let me know.   :)

There's an eBird record for American Bittern at Perkins, too. It came up when I drew my polygon. I didn't see that bird, but I saw a photo. It spent the entire day resting at the top of a tree.

Here's a note from Doug Moody at PRBO, who's developing this -

A couple of things are going on here.  I'm seeing some of the missing taxa for Evanston in the "Ebird BCN" collection.

The Western Grebe had an observation count of "zero", which I typically hide.  I'll include those records in the map interface from now on.

The other thing that's happening is that Cornell has informed me that they are no longer providing nightly updates of eBird data for the download tool.  They are moving to a schedule yet to be determined, possibly quarterly.  I'll chalk up any remaining inconsistencies to that.

Thanks for bringing these issues to my attention.

-----
I've asked whether we could get the BCN data included in the eBird file, as well as separate.  I"ll keep you posted.  Thanks!
