Chicago Park District staff and project partners will provide information and answer questions.

Big Marsh is a 278-acre wetland that is included in conservation plans of the city's Calumet Open Space Reserve Plan and the federal Millennium Reserve. However, the CPD has re-purposed part of Big Marsh for a sports arena that is incompatible with a nature park.

Without any public hearing, the city and Chicago Park District made a deal with SRAM to convert Big Marsh into a training center for national BMX and cyclocross competitions. SRAM, and its corporate sponsors, have rights to 45 acres of Big Marsh.

According to the Overall Plan-Calumet Bike Park at Big Marsh map by the Hitchcock Design Group, Big Marsh will not be segregated, from the intense competitive biking tournaments, but it will be integrated into it as just scenery.

Of course, locals are for the restoration of Big Marsh, but we are not for a beautification plan subjugated by SRAM. On October 18, 2014, corporate sponsors held a “Big Marsh Mashdown,” three, 4 lap races on the bike course prior to any public discussion of land use.

Many believe the area is a health risk for people, particularly youngsters, as the bike park is next to landfills, which are a serious health threat.  The East Side petcoke piles along the Calumet River are close.  This area is a slag landfill superfund site. Bikers involved in intense racing are at a great risk to suffer from asthma and other health problems due to area pollution.

Excerpts from an information sheet available at the Big Marsh Open House.

YES Big Marsh Nature Park - Restore all 278 acres

Future Ford Calumet Environmental Center in Hegewisch Marsh preserve not in a commercial bike park!

It is listed in the Chicago Nature and Wildlife Plan (2006-2016). (http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/dcd/supp_info/chicago_nature_andwildlifeplan.html

To the Chicago Park District:

   Did the City of Chicago abandon its conservation goals for the Calumet Area when they are most needed after decades of environmental abuse?

    Why was there no public hearing on the bike sports arena?

   Why were there no community meetings on the design plan, “Overall Plan-Calumet Bike Park?

   How could there be plans for a bike park with no Big Marsh Park Advisory Council?

   Will the CPD maintain a bike park operations through user fees?

   As a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency superfund site, make public the Environmental Impact Study.

   Make public the Big Marsh Framework Plan and Master Plan.
