Matt and I Just observed a near adult Black-tailed Gull at the marina boat launch area on the southwest side of lake Carlyle. We will stay and try to keep tabs on it. Can't drive down the road to Marina; must park along Main Drive and walk down.

Called Bill Rowe...........

Bird was RE-FOUND at the Dam/Spillway area that is just east of the Marina.
It is on the LAKE side in with a large number of RBGUs, needle in haystack.
Walk up to top of Dam to observe.
Near/same size as RBGUs, dark mantled and near adult bird.
Connection bad and did not ask about tail or wing pattern.

Also observing the bird at this location is Keith McMullen, Mark Seiffert
A reasonable photo was also taken.

Doug Hommert also took some great photos of that bird -- submitted with his ebird report -- can be seen at
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S26849741 -- or if that link doesn't work, view it under ebird's Illinois Rare Birds alert.

What a fantastic find!

Joan

Mark Seiffert just called (and I see Craig Taylor has already posted to IBET), the BLACK-TAILED GULL is sitting approximately 150 yards straight out from the dam. Several birders are on site besides these guys and more are on the way. It's very windy and cold on top of the dam per Mark so dress warmly!

Congrats on the great find, Bill and Matt and thanks for getting in touch with Mark. Mark, kudos to you (and to Charlene) for notifying many IL and MO birders ASAP!  I was lucky enough to be 30 minutes away!

Great bird and very nice photos from Doug and Leroy and I'm certain we'll be seeing others :)

Good birdings!

As Charlene noted, Dan Kassebaum did get some great shots as well. They are posted on his webpage under the Carlyle Lake report.

Very nice shots, Dan!

Of course, many got to see this beauty yesterday and many photos are being shared on the North American Gull site on Facebook.

For what it's worth, I just spoke with Mark Seiffert and he mentioned the bird is active in the spillway this morning and there are birders from Minnesota, Kansas, Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri and Illinois currently on site.

Today's weather is sunny, less windy (at least they say it is) and not as cold.

Good luck and good birdings!

On the morning of Thursday, January 14, my son Aaron and Ted Wolff saw the Black-tailed Gull below the spillway starting at 8 a.m.  He said it flew off from there and, as far as he knew, had not been seen again as of early afternoon.

According to IBET reports, the gull showed up again at about 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. You can read IBET postings online here: http://birding.aba.org/maillist/IL
