Forest Park Nature Center- Peoria County
« : October 23, 2008, 02:17:41 PM »
Forest Park Nature Center is located along the bluffs of the Illinois River.  It has seven miles of hiking trails through both forested woodlands (some steep trails go up the bluffs!) and prairie openings. Birds and other wildlife are easily observed because the animals are used to people walking the trails.  Birds I have seen at Forest Park include Wild Turkeys, Humming Birds, Nuthatches, Chickadees, Downy Woodpeckers, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Pileated Woodpeckers, Cardinals, Catbirds, Blue Jays, Cooper's Hawks (often nest there), Red-tailed Hawks, Philadelphia Vireo, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Kentucky Warbler, Pine Warbler, and Yellow-rumped Warbler.

eBird Hotspot coordinates: 40.7592, -89.5750

This nature center and preserve is a gem in central Illinois!  The birding is terrific and the nature-oriented store (it is much more than a "gift shop") is one of the best that I've seen.
