My favorite Shorebird, but not my favorite photo! Still at 113th & Hamlin location this morning. Thanks Ken Wysocki!

Still there late in the day, too.
What's up with that field? First Western Meadowlark. Then Whimbrel. What's next?

Unfortunately, this time I probably was the LAST person who is going to see the Ag Fields Whimbrel. Arrived about 745pm tonight with the kids in tow, ran into a neighbor (John) who has lived in the house on the south side of 113th at Hamlin for the last 24 years, and after two days of seeing folks with tripods, scopes, bins and cameras, he just had to ask.

I showed him the field guide, and he said he was going to come over and look.  But before he could get a look a dog off leash saw the bird, made a beeline toward it and flushed all the Killdeer and the Whimbrel. The Killdeer circled and settled back down, the Whimbrel called loudly as it flew with intent to the NNE.  We waited for a bit to see if it came back, we did not see that occur.

It was a great thing while it lasted, and I didn't realize that this is not only a Cook County bird, but that those fields are also in Chicago proper if I understand it correctly.  Sweet...except no photos (didn't even have a chance to get camera out for a shot) and not a very long look...Had I not been with the kids and the neighbor, I would have shared a bit of my mind with that dog owner...

Didn't have time or light to find Western Meadowlarks.

Steve Ambrose had the Whimbrel this morning at the same spot.

That is great news, but makes me wonder where it flew too, as I watched it fly to the NNE until I lost sight of it.  Maybe it made a great circle and came back...
