BREWER'S SPARROW at Northerly Island
« on: November 12, 2011, 07:42:18 AM »
Hello all,

Josh Engel just called me to report that he and Randy Shonkwiler found
a possible Brewer's Sparrow at Northerly Island. They got lots of
pictures, so the ID should be able to be confirmed soon-ish.  The bird
was on the eastern side of the little "peninsula" that juts out on the
northern end of Northerly Island.  This map shows the approximate
spot: http://g.co/maps/km4b3

Good luck,

Just had some great looks the Brewer's Sparrow found by Josh Engel (& Randy Shonkweiler?) on Northerly Island... Excellent cooperative sparrow!  Lots of folks got photos.

Remember, w/ the Bears game tomorrow, their will likely be no access to NI by car, look today if you can.

It's been fun chasing other people's rarities over the last few weeks, but I always prefer to find my own.  Here are a few photos:

Awesome photos, Josh. Great find! The last one of the streaked crown is really helpful.

According to Dan Kassebaum's website, this is the fifth state record. Remarkably, it is the fourth for Cook County.

I actually saw the one that wintered in Lincoln Park. I had just started my first internship at the Field Museum as a high school freshman and talked my mom into stopping at the Bird Sanctuary to look for the Brewer's Sparrow on our way down to the museum.

Congrats, Josh!  Great bird. We toyed with the idea of making the chase but figured it would be dark by the time we arrived. With 'Da Bears in town tomorrow, figured it might be next to impossible to access the area.

Keep us all posted. This would be a good bird to chase after tomorrow if it sticks around.

Good birdings,

Keith

I think the word "Possible" can be removed from the title of this post. :-)

What an excellent find, Josh! I got to Northerly Island around 3:00 p.m. and found birders guarding the sparrow right where the googlemap described. It was a bit skulky but easy to see once it got up. Thanks for the life bird!

After seeing the Brewer's Sparrow today, I was wondering how to age/sex this awesome bird. Also, is it possible to tell which population this is from?
